About us

Formation & Inspiration

Toxic IRL LLC was formed out of necessity by us, a young group of gamers who are fed up with toxicity and the inaction against it. We noticed that all of our friends mute voice chat instantly in every lobby they join for fear of getting called out or insulted. And other friends completely stopped playing online games because it just ruins the fun. A lot of the time, when we go to report people there isn't really a place to report for just being toxic, so we decided to make our own place. One where gamers who are fed up with toxicity can come to hold those toxic players accountable, feel good for sticking up for what they believe is right, find support from a community that understands, and contribute to the bigger picture of making gaming fun again for everyone.

The Vision

To provide a safe haven for gamers against cyberbullying and combat toxicity in the world. We know Toxic IRL will make an impact on toxic gaming culture—we have so many plans to get more involved with games and consoles—but the problem is much larger than that. Toxicity is plaguing almost every facet of society, and its grasp on gaming is an unfortunate consequence. We hope that our message of positivity will spread through our users' screens and push them to advocate and fight for an end to toxicity in the real world as well.

We are focused on fixing the problem...

Not making it worse. We do not support efforts to retaliate against toxic gamers by bullying the bullies. Some anti-toxicity companies have tried to counter toxicity in gaming using this aggressive approach. While it's typically with good intentions, attempting vengeance on toxic players is hypocritical and often has the opposite effect. It is harmful and usually makes toxicity worse. Toxic players feed off of retaliation and will likely fire back with even worse insults and harassment. We refuse to be a part of the problem that we are trying to fix.

...By encouraging a passive approach

Our focus is on rewarding the positive people who are standing up to toxicity rather than giving attention to negative players. When users report toxicity and interact with our site, they earn points, meet like-minded people, and climb the leaderboards. And, using methods we recommend for dealing with toxicity—muting and reporting—users feel a sense of accomplishment for helping others and not succumbing to the toxicity. Allowing them to get back to enjoying the games they love.

The Plan

1. Raise Awareness & Collect Data
To build interest and legitimacy, we need to show that we mean business. Data can do this. People will get fired up about fighting toxicity if they come to our site and see a vibrant community of people helping each other and actively holding players accountable. And more data helps us reach an even broader audience. We have strength in numbers and inspiration at our finger tips.

2. Build a Tight Community
Once we have a strong foundation of users, we plan to keep our scope internal rather than external. On our site, community is EVERYTHING. Our users report toxicity, stay positive, and support each other. Our admins monitor users and maintain infrastructure. And we, the people running this site, are passionate about the mission of Toxic IRL and use the site just as much as any other user, so we'll always be improving features, interacting with the community, and listening to feedback. We plan to stay focused on encouraging and rewarding the users who are trying to make a positive impact rather than giving attention to the toxic players who are having a negative impact. We keep our eyes open and persevere together.

3. Make an impact in the industry
As our numbers continue to grow and the world becomes increasingly fed up with the problem of toxicity in gaming, we will continue to put pressure on the games themselves to act on toxicity. We will release player leaderboards and dangerous cases to games every week, so they can't refuse to listen to the community's outcry. Then, we will work to build relationships with those game companies to add more toxic reporting into their reporting framework. All the while growing our community and support network on our site, so that our journey never ends. We will be resilient in our fight to end toxicity in gaming.
